Child Car Seat Law Change UK

child car seat law change uk booster

Strict new rules on the use of a child car seat are coming into force, limiting the use of backless booster seats for older children.

Under the new rules backless booster seats – also known as booster cushions – will only be approved for use for children taller than 125cm and weighing more than 22kg (3st 6.5lbs).

What is the new child car seat law?

UK law states that children must use a child car seat until they’re 12 years old or 135cm (4ft 5in) tall, whichever comes first. For children weighing more than 36kg (5st 10lb) but under 150cm (4ft 11in) it is advised to go by height.

Remember it is the driver’s responsibility for children being in car seats while travelling. But safety experts recommend you use a child car seat for all children under 150cm (4ft 11in).

From January 2017 manufacturers will no longer make boosters cushions for smaller children. Booster seats are not recommended by experts including Which? because they don’t offer protection in crashes.

If you’ve got an existing booster seat you will be able to use it without breaking any rules. However we would recommend that you buy your child a high-backed booster seat; which can offer more protection in a side-impact crash situation.
